What’s in your junk draw?
Inside this month’s issue:
- What’s been happening: Connecting and taking action during ‘Wellbeing Hour’
- What’s new: Are you thinking about World Mental Health Day in October yet?
- What’s coming up: Laughter yoga, book club, online networking
We are: Supportive – Curious – Welcoming – Encouraging – Straightforward. We are Garrett Learning.
What’s been happening?
As a Mental Health First Aider, we can have a supportive mental health conversation, but what next? Where do we signpost them to?
We have been learning about the benefits of talking therapy with Judith Harris from St John’s Counselling, which is a low-cost counselling service at £25 per session.
I love everything that Judith is supporting here, she shared that her students have completed their qualification and need to either evidence 100 hours or 450 hours of counselling support before formally being signed off and fully qualified. This is where her supportive services come into place -Find out more about St John’s at: https://www.counsellingstjohns.com/
Judith references ‘The Junk Draw’. We all have them and we put stuff away, shove it out of sight, however it doesn’t go away, it stays there and counselling lets you explore the draw.
I asked Judith what the best thing about being a counsellor is: ‘finding out the person did something they couldn’t do before the counselling’.
Extremely powerful stuff this talking therapy! – Contact Judith through her website

On the back of Mental Health Awareness Week in May, with the theme being: ‘Taking action for yourself, For others and for all’, a company reached out to me to run a ‘wellbeing hour’ to develop personal awareness skills, but also to:
- Build engagement and retention
- Strengthen organisational culture
- Improve customer experience
- Increase staff confidence
- Promote wellbeing and psychological safety
The hour session was all about ‘taking action’, which started with the location of people dialing in (we can also run this in person). We encouraged people to use this wellbeing hour to move from their normal/regular work location.
We’d suggest that they are comfortable:
- Walk and listen/ Get out in nature
- Change up their location by sitting somewhere new/ different area in the work environment
- Feel free to get crafty, colour, or do some gardening
- or enjoy a refreshing drink in their favourite place
The thought-provoking session to help people notice patterns, reflect honestly and leave with some realistic actions.

Last week was Loneliness Awareness Week: Loneliness Awareness Week. This year the campaign celebrates its 10th anniversary. Everyone can feel lonely at some point in their life. Mind is a great source of information, support and guidance if you are experiencing feelings of loneliness or you’d like to support someone who is.

What’s new?
It’s been 6 weeks since Mental Health Awareness Week and ‘Taking Action’ was the theme. It will soon be October where we recognise World Mental Health Day on Saturday 10th October. The theme for this year is: ‘It is Time to Prioritise Mental Health in the Workplace’. Have you thought about the conversations you could start with your teams now:
- How would our employees like to celebrate this day?
- What wellbeing activities could we all get involved in?
- Would anyone value a training awareness workshop? Perhaps the Wellbeing hour or training your people in mental health training?

We look forward to welcoming you along.

I’ve also been part of Sally’s book club for sometime now, if you’re interested in joining us.
Last night we were joined by author Stefanie Sword-Williams and she was so insightful, why do we give 110% of ourselves to work? It has a negative impact on our wellbeing and the only person who doesn’t always benefit is you!
Looking forward to the July book of ‘You’ve got this’ as a business owner (6 years next week!) this will be great. My network of people around me is so extremely important.
